Classical Japanese poetry known as "waka" has a deep history of at least 1400 years and played a fundamental role in the development of Japanese culture. Although they have now become a bit of a distant memory in today's modern life, the essence of waka still permeates the hearts of the Japanese people in all of the spiritual aspects that shape the sense of 'Japanese-ness', even in everyday life.

One example is the cherry blossoms. When Japanese people see or hear the wind through the cherry blossoms, they immediately think of and feel spring, while at the same time feeling the reassurance that the long, harsh winter is finally finishing and a new and warmer season of rebirth and renewal is about to begin. It is a poignant reminder of the cycle of life, and although you can find cherry blossoms in many different countries, they are especially loved and revered in Japan where they have been immortalized in waka since the very ancient times. The "Hanaguhashi Sakura" printed here on the back is a beautiful and ancient Japanese expression used in waka poetry to praise and honor the mighty cherry blossoms as the most beautiful of all flowers.
